The day before yesterday, the Times Higher Education (THE World University Rankings by Subject) released the results of the 2023 World University Rankings by Subject.

In the computer science subject rankings, the top ten are taken by foreign universities, with the United Kingdom and the United States occupying the majority. Two Chinese universities, Tsinghua University and Peking University, entered the top 20, and 12 entered the top 100. Among them, Tsinghua University ranks first in China and second in Asia.

The Thames World University Subject Rankings cover 11 subject areas including engineering technology, science, life sciences, computer science, education, pre-clinical and clinical health, business and economics, law, social sciences, arts and humanities, and psychology. The World University Rankings by Subject 2023 are compiled from data from the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023. The subject rankings use the same five first-level and 13 second-level indicators as the 2023 World University Rankings, but the ranking methodology for each subject has been carefully recalibrated and weights adjusted to suit the characteristics of each subject.

The subject ranking performance indicators include five areas: teaching (learning environment), research (number of papers, income and reputation), citations (research impact), industry income (knowledge transfer), and international outlook (academic staff, students and research).

1
Overview of the World University Rankings of Computing Subjects

About 974 institutions are included in the Times World University Computer Science subject rankings. Not only has the University of Oxford topped the Times World University Rankings for the seventh year in a row, but it has also topped the computing subject rankings for the fifth year in a row.

In the top ten list, British and American universities still occupy the majority, and the United States occupies half. In Asia, only the National University of Singapore entered the top ten, ranking 7th. Chinese universities are not in the top ten. The biggest change in the ranking is the Technical University of Munich in Germany, which rose to 10th from 14th last year.

Ranking of Computer Science in Chinese Universities

The data shows that there are 108 universities in China that are shortlisted for the subject list of computer science, including 78 universities in the Mainland, 6 in Hong Kong, 2 in Macau, and 22 in Taiwan. Among them, a total of 2 entered the top 20 and 12 entered the top 100.

Among the mainland universities, there are 7 universities that have entered the top 100 computer disciplines in the world:

  • Tsinghua University ranked 13th, down 1 place from last year, but still ranked first among Chinese universities and second in Asia;

  • Peking University ranked 20th, down 3 places, ranking second in China;

  • Shanghai Jiaotong University ranked 27th, up 3 places;

  • Zhejiang University ranked 40th, the same as last year;

  • Nanjing University ranked 58th, up 2 places;

  • University of Science and Technology of China ranked 64th, down 6 places;

  • Fudan University ranked 81st, down 13 places.

It can be seen that in this list, compared with 2022, the overall ranking of computer subjects in mainland universities has not risen much this year, and the ranking of several schools has dropped.

A total of 5 universities in Hong Kong, China, entered the top 100 in the world for computer science , and many schools fell: The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology ranked 29th (down 3 places), the Chinese University of Hong Kong ranked 36th (up 3 places), Hong Kong The University was 55th (down 14 places), the Hong Kong Polytechnic University was 79th (down 15 places), and the City University of Hong Kong was 82nd (up 6 places).
