25 years of “Contact”

On July 11, 1997, Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan’s film ” Contact ” was released. An anti-mainstream movie that seems like the complete opposite of the trend today: no aliens, no spaceships, and no Earth invaded. The film starred Jodie Foster and Carl Sagan died during filming. On the 25th anniversary of the film’s release, Vulture released an oral history of “Encounter” by interviewing dozens of people involved in the production of the film.

“Encounter” is a lightning-fast project that the major studios have almost never made before and probably never will — intellectually challenging, emotionally confusing, heavy on metaphors, and no one in it is in America The aliens were shot in the face in front of the flag. “We used to do that,” Foster said. “We used to make movies that resonated and entertained.” Ann Druyan: It was 1978. Carl and I are still working on Cosmos. The popular saying at the time, “Well, if men are as smart as women, why is there no Leonardo for women? Einstein without women?” It made us both angry. I just co-authored the part of the Cosmos about the great library of Alexandria, and the truth is that the head of the library, Hypatia, was a mathematician who focused on the Diophantine equations (later this question aroused Newton’s interest). Her great light of wisdom was rewarded by being dragged from her own carriage and cut to pieces by an abalone shell in AD 415. Back then people gave everything to Carl. He’s a phenomenon in the culture, and everyone wants to have a relationship with him. So we knew we could write a book and get a movie contract. Sitting in the swimming pool of our tiny rented house in West Hollywood one night, we agreed that we would tell a story in which women would not only become intellectual heroes, but in the great tradition of Gilgamesh, she would go Sailing while the men stay at home.
