U.S. technology media The Information reported on August 4 that Japan’s 7-Eleven has acquired Skipcart, a four-year-old delivery startup, according to people familiar with the matter. Skipcart previously developed a network of drivers in the United States for the fast delivery of food and other goods.
According to the report, the acquisition is of great significance and may change the business model of 7-Eleven and the food delivery platform DoorDash. Currently, DoorDash’s contractor drivers deliver to 7-Eleven customers who place orders through the app or the 7-Eleven app, the people said. And with 7-Eleven’s acquisition of Skipcart, the company now intends to compete directly with DoorDash and U.S. grocery and alcohol delivery startup GoPuff.
