Friends ask why they like Mike . I remember the most impressive example of his book title ” Sexual Text “, which actually uses the Mandarin “wén běn” to harmonize the Cantonese “揾ben” (uneasy, self-inflicted hardship).
People who grew up in Shenzhen before 1997 somewhat admired Hong Kong. There was no such thing as communist Chinese back then, but I already hated the Chinese language—because of the vivid Hong Kong language. It is well known that Hong Kong people despise the mainland, but here is a writer who is deeply rooted in Hong Kong’s context and is actually using Mandarin. It was later learned that Mike grew up in Singapore, and his sensitivity to Mandarin is probably higher than the Hong Kong average. But that short title still made me understand what freedom is. The use of the Chinese language is a sign of not being killed by the Chinese language.
