Chinese “Internet celebrity” Luke lured local children in the African country of Malawi, shouted racist slogans in Chinese, and made a video for sale online. Luke was wanted by Malawi police last week and arrested in the neighboring eastern Zambia city of Chipata after reports on the BBC’s Africa Eye program exposed his exploitative practices.
According to the BBC’s program footage, a group of African boys surrounded the camera and recited racist sentences such as “I’m a nigger with a low IQ” in unison without understanding the meaning of the Chinese words. Local children refer to Luke as “uncle”, and he will give the children $0.50 a day, asking them to perform in front of the camera, record congratulations or self-deprecating videos, which are sold on Chinese social platforms for up to $70. After the incident came to light, the local government was alarmed. Malawi authorities have issued a warrant for Luke. On June 20, Julu, a spokesman for Malawi’s immigration department, confirmed to AFP that Luke was arrested in the eastern city of Chipata in neighboring Zambia.
I think Luke is a victim of education and politics.
Luke’s own cultural level is not high, he has been brainwashed for a long time, and he has no correct understanding and distinction between racism and patriotism. I believe that Luke himself did not intend to engage in racism, but the long-term lack of education in the country made him not Recognizing that racism is wrong, the propaganda of the self-confidence of various major powers on the WeChat public made him naturally develop the concept of “racial self-confidence”. Going further and further down the wrong path. As for child exploitation, I guess Luke’s line of work is rather introverted. It’s a manual job, and he doesn’t make a lot of money. The income he claims has a lot of bragging rights.
Luke’s misconceptions about promoting racism were of course punished, and he was quickly arrested by the police after his own exposure on the BBC’s programme and faced legal action.
Officials also quickly cut him off. The Chinese embassy in Malawi issued a statement last week condemning Luke’s actions, saying “the Chinese government has zero tolerance for racism” and saying, “The embassy will work with Malawi. We will work closely with Victoria to ensure that this unfortunate case is dealt with appropriately.”
For Luke, he is a victim and should be punished by the law, but I feel that those who led him down this wrong path should also be punished legally and morally.
For those we-media people who are overseas, they can legally take advantage of regional and cultural differences and show their talents in foreign countries, but they must remember to abide by local laws, regulations and ethics. If these laws, regulations and ethics are consistent with domestic If there is a conflict between laws and ethics, the local laws and ethics shall prevail.
