36氪 was informed that Shanghai Geometry Partner Intelligent Driving Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Geometry Partner”) recently announced the completion of a new round of strategic financing. This round of financing was exclusively invested by the Society of Automata Engineers (SAE International, hereinafter referred to as “SAE”). .

After this round of financing, SAE and Geometry Partners will optimize the strategic layout in the field of autonomous driving in the following aspects: establish the “Shanghai Fully Autonomous Driving (FSD) Perception Fusion and Intelligent Decision Engineering Center”; develop a high-performance FSD computing platform (NPU); Pilot the new-generation National Artificial Intelligence Innovation Zone in Shanghai to build an ecosystem that includes FSD-related chip, software, testing, and application innovation; strengthen plans in the field of autonomous and driverless vehicles to promote the future development of the automotive industry.

In February of this year, Geometry Partners also obtained an exclusive strategic investment from Boyuan Capital, a subsidiary of Bosch in Germany. In August 2021, Geometry Partners completed Matrix Partners China, Xiaomi Changjiang Industrial Fund, Baidu Ventures, Si Lijie, Yaotu Capital, Xin Yuyi He, Puhua Capital and other investors have accumulated more than 500 million yuan in Pre-A round financing.

Founded in October 2018, Geometry Partners is a high-tech enterprise integrating R&D, manufacturing, sales and ecological construction of autonomous driving software and hardware products. It adheres to the technical route of “low cost, all-weather, high reliability, and easy mass production”.

At present, the company mainly provides 4D millimeter wave imaging radar as the main sensor, supplemented by visible light vision, infrared imaging and other fusion perception systems, which can achieve all-weather and full-time perception; provide automatic L2-L5 based on machine perception and deep learning. Drive software and hardware integrated systems and total solutions, and deliver them flexibly.

The main function of traditional vehicle-mounted millimeter-wave radar (also known as 3D radar) is dynamic obstacle perception, which can provide distance, azimuth, and speed information between the target object and the radar, but without altitude information, it cannot image and identify image information.

The 4D millimeter wave imaging radar increases the analysis of the height dimension data of the target, which can realize the perception of the four dimensions of distance, azimuth, altitude and speed, and can output rich point cloud information on dynamic and static targets and the environment.

Even Tesla, which has always adhered to the pure vision route, was recently reported by foreign media to have applied to the US authorities for the use of new high-resolution radars in its electric vehicles. According to documents provided by Tesla to the authorities, the high-resolution radar will be used for imaging, redundant with Tesla’s unique self-driving vision scheme, media said.

Regarding the technical route, Xue Dan, CEO of Geometry Partners, also told 36氪: With the gradual implementation of the trend of intelligent driving, 4D millimeter wave imaging radar will play an increasingly important role in the field of passenger cars. On the one hand, the electromagnetic wave characteristics of radar can form heterogeneous perception information with existing optical sensors such as lidars and cameras, and play a role in perception redundancy. 24/7″ forward.

He further said that for intelligent driving, some OEMs have adopted 1-2 solid-state lidars on some high-end models to meet the demand for high-precision perception in front of them, but the coverage of solid-state lidars is 60-120° FOV. 4D millimeter wave imaging radar can take into account the requirements of high-precision perception and low cost. If it is integrated with solid-state LiDAR, high-level intelligent driving will land faster. .

Geometry Partners is also pre-researching a new set of intelligent driving system solutions, using 5R5V (5 millimeter-wave imaging radars + 5 cameras) or 5R7V (5 millimeter-wave imaging radars + 7 cameras) to achieve autonomous driving below the L4 level Perceived demand, and the cost of software and hardware can be controlled at the thousand yuan level.

Regarding mass production and delivery, Geometry Partners’ 4D millimeter-wave imaging radar autonomous driving solution has passed the commercial vehicle test of SAIC Group and is being delivered on a small scale. In terms of mass production of passenger cars, Geometry Partners has already started testing and pre-installation matching on models launched by SAIC in 2023-2024, and has also been applied to other OEMs.

Xue Dan said: From 2024, 4D millimeter wave imaging radar will gradually usher in a large-scale implementation, and the industry will usher in a real explosion in 2027.

“SAE J3016” April 2021 Update Source: SAE

For this round of investment, Raman Venkatesh, Ph.D., executive vice president and chief operating officer of SAE, said that as the trend of autonomous and driverless technology becomes clearer, SAE is relying on the most reliable Engineering technical resources, consensus standard system and strong human resources help the healthy and orderly development of the global autonomous driving industry. “As one of the most vibrant markets for the development of autonomous driving technology, China has produced a number of hard technology companies with outstanding innovation capabilities, practical capabilities and ecological construction capabilities. These companies will jointly promote the development of autonomous driving in the world. The support of Geometry Partners is one of the standouts.”

It is understood that SAE is one of the largest standard setting organizations in the world and plays a very key role in the development history of the global automotive industry. The “J” series of documents formulated by SAE are the most important and well-known standards in the industry. One, which includes SAE J3016 on the classification of driving automation, first introduced in 2014. In recent years, with the rapid development of autonomous driving technology around the world, SAE is also strengthening its layout planning in the field of autonomous and unmanned driving to promote the development of the future mobility industry.
