After Microsoft halted sales of its products in Russia on March 4, searches for Microsoft’s pirated software have surged by 250 percent, and searches for downloads of the spreadsheet program Excel have grown by 650 percent since June. Microsoft said last month that it would slash operations in Russia. The move is a huge blow to Russia, which relies on foreign software for its manufacturing and engineering systems. At the same time, Russian government agencies are also starting to shift from Windows desktops to Linux desktops . But the transfer doesn’t happen overnight.
