Pinwan, July 2, according to Jiemian News, Google said it will start automatically deleting information about going to abortion clinics from users’ location records. Calls for tech companies to tighten privacy controls have grown after the U.S. Supreme Court decided last week to remove the constitutionally protected abortion right.
Alphabet-owned Google said physical locations visited by users of Google products are stored in the location history settings of Google accounts. Jen Fitzpatrick, Google’s senior vice president of core systems and experiences, wrote in a blog post Friday that the setting is off by default, and only those users who choose to turn the feature on will store location history.
Some of the places people go to — including counseling centers, domestic violence shelters, abortion clinics, fertility centers, addiction treatment facilities, weight-loss clinics, cosmetic clinics and other medical facilities — can be particularly private, Google announced today, Fitzpatrick wrote. Google’s systems recognize that someone has visited these places and will delete the entries from their location history shortly after their visit.
