Fede Galizia was an Italian Renaissance still life, portrait and religious painter. Known in particular for her fruit still lifes, she was one of the earliest practitioners of European art. Galizia was the daughter of the miniature artist and painter Nunzio Galizia, who had been trained by her father in Milan early on. At the age of 12 she showed a talent, and the portraits she created as a teenager were highly praised, creating works of sincerity. Along with Clara peters (c. 1589-1657) of the Netherlands, Feder was one of several female artists who played an important role in the emergence of the relatively new genre of still life art.
In this painting, a group of softly shaped peaches cast soft shadows on a light tabletop. Peaches and jasmine are also featured in other still life paintings by Feder Galizia, while tulips are rarely seen in her work.
