Humans can hear much better underwater than previously thought

Millions of years ago, all mammals lived on land, but some species abandoned land and adapted to life in the sea: seals and whales, for example, can now live underwater. The species that remained were similarly adapted to terrestrial life. So it’s no surprise that a group of experts concluded in a recent study that people today hear better on land than underwater. Yet the study also offers unexpected information about human hearing. Jakob Christensen-Dalsgaard said: “It was 26 decibels lower than assumed in previous studies because we concluded that humans can hear much better underwater than previously thought . In fact, the threshold of 500 Hz and the About the same level of hearing underwater as animals such as seals.” Jakob Christensen-Dalsgaard said: “You shouldn’t expect to jump into the sea and be perfectly oriented with your hearing alone.” “Hearing is more than just being able to pick up. Sound. It also has to determine the direction of the sound – which is very difficult for people underwater.”
