background

I have been using pocket as a favorite to read later. Recently, I felt that the search results of Pocket could not meet my needs, so I looked for a substitute, and finally planned to use Notion Web Clipper and Notion as a substitute. Although I am Notion’s Team Plan, I have never I found a suitable scenario to use Notion, mainly because I felt that the data of Notion was uncontrollable, so it could not be used as a note-taking software, but if it was only an information management tool, it should be enough. Data is migrated to Notion. During the migration process, I found that there is a lot of data in the Pocket API, so I plan to simply analyze the data I have used for so many years to see if I can find anything. The data is my own Pocket data, obtained through the official API, and the time span is from December 29, 2017 to June 28, 2022.

Summarize

  • The read ratio is in line with my expectations, and when I first started using Pocket, I usually used it as a “favorite” rather than a “reading list”, so the added entry was not an article, even if “later” ” It is not easy to read it. Later, the needs of the collection have been put into the notes, and this symptom has been relieved a lot.
  • The ratio of 404, I said on Twitter before, if an article is not read in time, in the current Internet age, we must be ready for it to disappear at any time. Although there are many ways of WebArchive, it is inconvenient after all. This is also one of my dissatisfaction with Pocket, I’ve been using it for so long and I haven’t figured out what page it will save the text, and what page will only save a link. It is still necessary to read it in time, if it cannot be read in time, it is also best to save the complete page for subsequent sorting.
  • I often face a problem in the usual use process: I have read an article in my memory, but I can’t find it. At this point, I will try to find all kinds of keywords I think, but often I can’t find them. I can see some clues by looking at this tag ratio. Now I will add tags (one or more) to each reading entry. , to minimize this occurrence.
  • On average, 1.3 articles are added per day, but on average, the reading does not reach 1 article per day, which eventually causes the Pocket list to become longer and longer. Even if I add a periodic task to the Todo List to remind myself to clean up every week, there is no way.
  • Reading time is very confusing. In the first point, I have mentioned that my Pocket is often used as a “favorite”, which leads to many articles that are destined to not be read, and there are many cases that they have not been read for several years. The longest reading took 999 days. This is because I found out that Pocket has a random URL some time ago. Visiting this URL will automatically jump to a random entry in my Pocket list. This mechanism has cleaned up many old entries.
