BYD overtook Tesla as the world’s largest electric car maker by sales , a sign of China’s growing dominance of the industry. Shenzhen-based BYD sold 641,000 units in the first half of this year, up more than 300 percent year-on-year. Tesla, which sold 564,000 vehicles, attributed the difficulties in the second quarter to China’s coronavirus lockdown and supply chain issues. BYD also surpassed LG to become the second-largest EV battery maker, behind CATL. In the second quarter, many places in China suffered from the new crown blockade. The Tesla China factory is located in Shanghai, where the blockade is severe, while the BYD factory is far away from the most restrictive areas.
