EU approves nuclear energy as green energy

The European Parliament voted on Wednesday to classify nuclear and natural gas as environmentally sustainable energy sources . 278 MPs voted against, but not the majority needed to reject the proposal. Under the newly approved taxonomy, nuclear and gas-fired power plants built before 2030 will be classified as transitional energy as long as they replace dirty fossil fuels such as coal and oil. Nuclear power projects require the use of accident-tolerant fuels and compliance with radioactive waste disposal standards to be funded. Although nuclear power plants emit no greenhouse gases, they produce highly toxic radioactive waste. In the EU, France supports nuclear power and Germany supports natural gas. To reach a compromise nuclear power and natural gas were combined into one proposal.
