In response to malicious programs such as ransomware, Microsoft earlier this year announced plans to change the way MS Office handles macros: If a file uses a macro command downloaded from the Internet, macros will be disabled entirely by default. The change will first be available to Office v2203 users as a preview starting April 2022, and rolling out to the subscription version of Microsoft 365 Office starting in June. But last week, Microsoft notified IT administrators that it had withdrawn plans to disable VBA macros, based on user feedback the test had received. Disabling macros may break some functionality and cause Microsoft to decide to roll back. If an MS Office macro runs in sandbox mode and accesses any other document without the user’s permission, the security risk it poses is virtually non-existent .
