Why can’t cars be designed to brake automatically when they crash?

This prosperous world is as you wish. But I still want to remind you that this function must not be relied on, it is unstable.

This question was asked in 2012, and Zhihu has just been established, so I can’t help feeling emotional. You must have been a thinking young man back then, but now you have made the world a better place through thinking and practice.

As a junior who is concerned about this issue, I am excited to report to you: This prosperous world is as you wish! In fact, such a function, the AEB function, has already appeared, namely Automatic Emergency Braking. The “hint” function you mentioned is also a part of it, called FCW, that is, Forward Collision Warning (FCW) forward collision warning system.

This is an AEB horizontal evaluation test we did recently. We found 6 models equipped with AEB functions on the market and formulated a set of scoring standards. I hope to use the most realistic picture to tell you the actual capabilities of these models at the AEB level.

This is the first time we have done a horizontal evaluation, in which the test standards refer to the evaluation standards of C-NCAP, Euro NCAP and other institutions, and set three main test scenarios: 1. Vehicle to road vulnerable groups; 2. Vehicle On the car; 3. The car faces common obstacles on the road.

And set different weights for vehicle identification, warning, braking and whether it can be successfully stopped, and through more process scores, the test results are more objective. And finally simplified to a total score, so that everyone can understand at a glance.

I hope that our shallow cognition + hard practice will not be in vain. Not much to say, the video is here, I hope it can help you a little.
