Sina Technology News Beijing time on the evening of July 18, according to reports, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said today that it will launch a special investigation into a recent Tesla Model Y crash. The accident resulted in the death of a motorcycle driver.

Since 2016, NHTSA has opened 37 special investigations into crashes involving Tesla vehicles. In these crashes, car owners are suspected of using advanced driver assistance systems such as Autopilot. A total of 18 people have died in these Tesla-related investigations, which include a recent fatal crash in California.

NHTSA declined to say which crash was involved in the investigation. But according to media reports, on July 7, a 48-year-old motorcycle driver died after colliding with a 2021 Tesla Model Y on the Riverside Freeway in California, USA.

In recent weeks, NHTSA has opened three special investigations, including one in response to a Florida crash that killed a 66-year-old Tesla driver and a 67-year-old passenger. Another was for a fatal pedestrian crash in California involving a 2018 Tesla Model 3.

Typically, NHTSA annually conducts more than 100 special accident investigations into emerging technologies and other potential vehicle safety issues. Investigating these issues can help regulators formulate some safety rules.

Tesla has yet to comment on this.

In June, NHTSA launched an investigation into 830,000 Tesla vehicles focused on evaluating the safety of the Autopilot system. NHTSA upgraded the investigation to an “engineering analysis,” a necessary step before a mandatory recall.

In August, NHTSA launched another preliminary assessment of the Autopilot system involving 765,000 vehicles after a Tesla vehicle collided with a stationary emergency vehicle.

NHTSA released data in June this year that between July 2021 and May 15 this year, 12 auto companies reported 367 crashes involving assisted driving systems to it. Among them, Tesla accounted for 273 cases.
