Arm CPU company’s core technology has received another $50 million in financing, led by NIO Capital

Recently, Arm CPU’s core technology has completed a new round of financing. This round of financing was led by Weilai Capital and Qiming Venture Capital, Yunjiu Capital, Cornerstone Capital, Zhongke Chuangxing, Harvest Capital, Bertelsmann Asia Investment Fund, Yuanhe Puhua joined the investment, and the financing amount was about 50 million US dollars. After this round of financing, the core technology is valued at about $300 million.

In February this year, this core technology has completed two consecutive rounds of investment. In the angel round and angel + round, the company has received tens of millions of dollars in financing. Among them, the angel round investor is Lenovo Venture Capital; the angel + round lead investor is Qiming Venture Capital, and the co-investors are Yuanhe Puhua, Yunjiu Capital, and Yunxiu Capital.

In April, this core technology received an Angel++ round of financing led by Shunwei Capital, Qiming Venture Capital and Yunjiu. The amount of this round of financing exceeded 100 million.

This financing is the fourth round of financing obtained by this core technology since its establishment.

Founded by the current CEO Sun Wenjian in October 2021, this core technology is an enterprise focusing on the development and production of general-purpose intelligent computer chips, and is committed to developing intelligent computing solutions compatible with the Arm instruction set.

The core technology’s first product will be a computer CPU.

This core technology said that the most important goal at present is to make the first chip, and complete commercialization within 1-2 years, and then gradually expand new product lines and application scenarios. At present, the first computer CPU of this core technology has been in the engineering design stage.

Attempts to design computer CPUs using the Arm architecture have been around for a long time.

Since entering the era of mobile Internet, Arm has ushered in explosive growth because of its low power consumption, low cost, and small size, which is suitable for the development needs of mobile Internet.

Today, the CPUs of mobile devices such as mobile phones and tablets are almost all designed based on the Arm architecture, while the desktop-level CPUs are still dominated by the x86 architecture.

With the continuous development of the Arm architecture, the Arm architecture has gradually entered the design of desktop-level chips and competed with the Intel x86 architecture.

As early as 2016, the chip giant Qualcomm tried to join forces with Microsoft to release the Surface Pro X, a computer based on the Arm architecture CPU, but the market response was mediocre. Then in 2018, Amazon also launched the server chip Grivton based on the Arm architecture. In 2020, Apple’s M1 chip based on the Arm architecture was born, successfully bringing the Arm architecture into the battlefield of desktop-level chip design.

Sun Wenjian, founder of this core technology, believes that the main reason for the unsatisfactory application of Arm to computers or servers is that the software ecology is not perfect, and the success of Apple’s M1 chip shows that the time for Arm-based CPU business is ripe.

This core technology brings together a number of talents with rich working experience in the semiconductor industry.

Founder Sun Wenjian graduated from Xidian University and has nearly 20 years of experience in large-scale digital integrated circuit design. He has served as the director of chip design and the head of the customer customization department in China at AMD.

CTO Liu Fang worked on chip core development at PA Semi and served as Apple’s chip architect after the company was acquired by Apple. During this period, her team was led by Jim Keller, a legend in the chip industry. She later served as the chief SOC architect of Meta and led the development of Meta’s self-developed SOC during her tenure.

In addition, this core technology also brings together a group of talents such as Liu Gang, Chu Ranzhou, Jiang Zuojiu, who have the resumes of AMD, IBM and other major manufacturers and more than 20 years of work experience in semiconductor-related industries. Leifeng.com
