The federal government is investigating whether Tesla’s Autopilot system can safely identify motorcycles after two fatal crashes. The California regulator, the Department of Motor Vehicles, accused Tesla of making false claims about its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving technologies. The first of the two crashes occurred in the early hours of July 7 in Riverside, California, when a Tesla Model Y hit a motorcycle from behind on State Route 91, killing the rider. The second incident occurred on the evening of July 24 on I-15 in Draper, Utah, when a Tesla Model 3 also collided with a motorcycle from behind, killing the driver. California is investigating whether the car had Autopilot activated at the time of the crash. The person involved in the crash in Utah admitted that he was using an assisted driving system and had his hands off the steering wheel.
