Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 11 has an encryption bug that can cause data loss to run slowly . The issue primarily affects recent Windows devices that support the Vector Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) (VAES) instruction set. VAES is part of the AVX-512 instruction set, which is supported on Intel’s Ice Lake, Tiger Lake, Rocket Lake, and Alder Lake architecture processors. AMD’s latest Zen 4 processors also support VAES, but it won’t be released until the fall. Microsoft says it caused problems when the Windows encryption library SymCrypt updated encryption instructions to introduce a new code path. It recommends that Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022 users install the June 2022 security update, which contains an initial fix for the bug by disabling cryptographic acceleration. The July 2022 security update will restore performance to previous levels.
