Windows 11 disables Internet Explorer, but people keep trying to wake it up

The deceased will not die, but will rise again, and its momentum will be stronger.

On June 16, 2022, Microsoft officially announced the “retirement” of the 27-year-old IE browser and stopped providing maintenance and support for the IE browser.

But in fact, IE browser is not dead yet. Its programs, or its shell, are still dormant in the system disks of countless Windows users. Even the Windows 11 system, which claims to have completely abandoned IE since its launch in 2021, actually has the final version of IE 11 built in.

Microsoft just introduced a command to disable IE. If a user wants to open an IE app or shortcut, the system “forwards the call”, launching the “faster, safer and more modern” Edge browser. After IE was “retired”, Microsoft introduced the same mechanism for most versions of Windows 10 in subsequent update patches.

Microsoft keeps IE for compatibility reasons. Up to now, there are still a large number of enterprises and government departments around the world, especially those involved in online banking, securities, education, etc., still using IE browsers, as well as web pages, applications and ActiveX controls that are only compatible with IE.

In theory, when browsing the websites of these institutions, users can start the “IE mode” of the Edge browser, use the residual IE code, and reload the website again.

According to Microsoft’s official blog, their support for IE compatibility mode will continue until at least 2029. Those who are still using outdated procedures have a full seven years to update their websites to keep up with the times.

Whether or not these agencies are doing what Microsoft expects, however, is another matter. Since the Win11 system was launched, there have been many posts on the help page of the Microsoft Community Forum asking “how to start IE under the Win11 system”. Users who post will also complain that Edge’s compatibility is not satisfactory, and Edge’s IE mode alone cannot guarantee 100% access to outdated websites.

“当火车、水坝、发电站等都开始爆炸时,微软营销部门将提供什么作为补偿?” “When trains, dams, power stations, etc. all start to explode, what will Microsoft marketing offer as compensation?”

Microsoft must know how to use IE in Windows 11, but keep silent. Although it will offend a group of network engineers, IE is currently the foundation of another group of social animals, and they have never given up trying to “reincarnate” IE.

There is no magic required to resurrect IE, and the steps are far simpler than many people think. For example, when Win11 was just launched, there was a way to use a script program to open the IE browser on the Internet. It can be finished in two natural paragraphs:

First, find the “Default Browser” tab in Edge’s settings menu, and set the “Let Internet Explorer open websites in Microsoft Edge” option to “Never.”

Then, create a new text document in txt format, enter a string of the following code, and save it. Change the file suffix from txt to vbs, and then double-click to start the vbs file to open the IE browser.

This method is confirmed to be feasible on the 21H2 version of the Win11 system. After the “retirement” of the IE browser on June 16, some users reported that this method did not work on systems that received subsequent update patches, and the specific situation still needs further verification.

The other method is simpler, and a piece of text is enough. We just need to open “Internet Options” through the control panel, or search for “Internet Options” directly in the start menu. After the dialog box pops up, we click the question mark in the upper right corner to provide help information, the system will automatically wake up the IE browser and let it open the corresponding help page.

According to a tweet by program engineer XenoPanther, the vulnerability was also fixed by Microsoft in subsequent versions of the system. He participated in Microsoft’s preview experience program and tested the developer version of Win11. The fixes applied in this version are likely to be applied to the official version of Win11 on 22H2, which is expected to be released in the second half of this year.

However, Xeno tweeted another picture, proving that IE is still alive in the developer version of Win11. To wake it up, just go a few steps beyond the “question mark” method. After testing, the method he gave was confirmed to be available in the 21H2 version of Win11.

After opening Internet Options, let’s ignore the question mark, select the Programs tab, and click Manage Add-ons.

On the new page that pops up, we click “Learn More About Toolbars and Extensions” in the lower left corner, and we can quietly wait for a miracle to happen – after all, it’s that IE, you have to wait.

The above resurrection methods do not modify any system files, nor do they have any negative impact on computer operation. Win11 users with special needs may try it; .

It just needs to be clarified that whether it is the old method or Xeno’s new method, it is not guaranteed to work on everyone’s computer, nor is it guaranteed to be invalid on the updated Win11 version. Numerous factors will affect the success rate of resurrecting IE. For example, the browser bundled with domestic antivirus software will preempt the position of the default browser, thereby preventing the rebirth of IE.

Moreover, even if IE is successfully summoned on Win11, there is no guarantee that IE can be used to open outdated websites 100% – there are always compatibility issues and “shit mountain” codes of some websites, even the ancient IE can’t understand.
