The world’s largest smartphone market is in trouble. Mobile phone shipments in China fell 14.7% in the second quarter, with Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo all reporting sharp declines in sales, according to IDC. The reasons for the drop in sales are thought to include a drop in demand due to the strict Covid Zero policy, as well as a highly saturated market, with the golden age of smartphones coming to an end . Ten years ago, when the 4G era was just beginning, there were still many people in China who had never had access to smartphones. But in today’s 5G era, the smartphone market is highly saturated. China has a population of 1.4 billion, but the number of active mobile phones exceeds 1.6 billion, with more than one per capita. This ratio is well above the global average. The need to replace phones is decreasing, and the lifespan of smartphones is increasing. The price of 5G networks is keeping many people on 4G networks.
