Mary Cassatt was a French Impressionist painter, a close friend of Edgar Degas, and the only American in Impressionist circles. Around 1890, her artwork turned to the theme of children and women caring for children, which reflected her love of nephews and nieces, as well as her interest in raising children. The painting focuses on the connection between mother and child. The artist transformed a popular Impressionist theme—the adult female bather—into a gentle mother: a beautifully dressed woman bathing her baby instead of herself. The blond boy is said to be named Jules and is one of Cassatt’s regular models.
