Meteorology is often called the only field where experts can err and still keep their jobs. But this may not be suitable for Hungary. Hungary on Monday fired two of its most senior meteorological officials – the head of the weather bureau and his deputy – for inaccurate forecasts. The National Weather Service predicted a severe storm over the weekend, prompting the government to delay plans for the National Day fireworks display, but nothing happened that day. Two top weather officials have been fired for inaccurate forecasts. The Bureau of Meteorology issued an apology on its Facebook account, saying the day’s actual weather was the least likely scenario based on its modelling, but “unfortunately, this element of uncertainty is part of our profession”.
