Texas has reported its first monkeypox-related death in the United States . Health officials are not yet sure if monkeypox was the cause of his death. The adult patient died Aug. 28 in Harris County, and an autopsy is underway, with results due in the coming weeks. The Texas Department of Health said the person was severely immunocompromised and is investigating to determine the role of monkeypox in the death. Jennifer McQuiston, deputy director of the CDC’s High Consequence Pathogens and Pathology Division, stressed at a White House news conference that deaths from monkeypox are very rare and that vaccination, testing and treatment can help prevent monkeypox. A total of 15 monkeypox-related deaths have been recorded around the world. Some of the deceased were also immunocompromised, but others were thought to be healthy until death.
