Both heatwaves and air pollution affect human health, what if they happen at the same time ? The researchers looked at more than 1.5 million deaths in California between 2014 and 2020 — summers in the golden state often coincide with heatwaves and wildfire-induced air pollution. The results showed that the number of deaths rose on days with high heat and high PM2.5 index, while the risk of death more than tripled when high temperature and high pollution occurred at the same time. The hottest and most polluted 10% of days were associated with a 4% higher risk of death than days with normal temperatures and clean air; the first 1% of days were associated with a 21% higher risk of death; and for those over 75, The risk of death would also increase by more than a third.
