The naming scheme for USB is becoming increasingly confusing. The USB Promoter Group announced the USB4 v2 standard, which can transfer data rates up to 80 Gbps, twice the existing USB4 v1 standard—but some USB4 v1s only support up to 20 Gbps instead of 40 Gbps. The reason is that the USB Type-C cable is separate from other specifications of the USB protocol, the cables can be the same, but the supported transfer rates are not the same. The USB specifications supported by USB Type-C include USB4 2.0, USB4 1.0, USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB 3.2 Gen 1 or USB 2.0, and Intel’s Thunderbolt protocol. Intel announced in 2017 that it would exempt Thunderbolt 3 from royalties and donate it to the USB Promoter Group. USB4 is based on the Thunderbolt 3 protocol.
