FTC will crack down on exploitation of gig workers

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Thursday announced plans to crack down on the exploitation of gig workers . The FTC adopted a policy statement detailing issues facing gig workers, including deceptive claims about their wages and hours, unfair contract terms, and more, and details the steps the FTC plans to take. Gig companies consider their workers to be independent contractors and have fought to keep it that way. “Regardless of how gig companies choose to classify their gig workers, gig workers are consumers and entitled to the protections of the laws we enforce,” Samuel Levine, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in a statement.
