Uber’s network systems were hacked. The attackers also sent screenshots of emails, cloud storage and code repositories to The New York Times. Uber employees received a message from the hacker via work messaging app Slack: “I announce I am a hacker and Uber has suffered a data breach.” Uber ordered employees to disable Slack. The New York Times said that the hacker, who was only 18 years old and had studied cybersecurity for several years, targeted Uber because the company’s security was too weak. Uber issued a statement confirming the breach, saying it had called the police and would release more information in the future. Hackers claim the intrusion was accomplished by stealing an employee’s password through social engineering methods.
