The U.S. Department of Justice formed the Digital Asset Coordinators Network to specifically combat cryptocurrency crime. Eun Young Choi, first director of the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team, said the network was created in part because of its high level of technical expertise that can be used to prosecute cryptocurrency cases, and the fact that digital currencies are used in several different crimes fields are becoming more common. She also said these areas of crime include money laundering or financing terrorism, being a payment tool used by ransomware hackers and being a direct target of theft.
