I believe that many of my friends have experienced insomnia, and it happened that one night last week, I was unfortunately also insomnia.
That day, I woke up at two in the morning and couldn’t fall asleep. “League of Legends” was under maintenance again, and there was nothing special to watch online, so I suddenly thought of the game “Insomnia”. The theme of the game fit my mood at the time, so I decided to try it out.
Before playing “Insomnia”, I read the introduction of this game, and I know some of the highlights. For example, the dark blue and orange color scheme in the game attracts me very much. This is a small game about modern anxiety, developed by Perfect Day Studios. Their predecessor, A Perfect Day, told the story of what happened on the last day of 1999, and it was a game that impressed me a lot.
The demo version of “Insomnia” is not long, but there is also a four-act theater for players to experience. The title of the prologue is called “Please start the show”, which is specific to the various conversations between a girl and the elf in her head. In this scene, players can feel the psychological struggle presented by insomnia.
Girl: “My body is too tired.”
Elf: “But the brain is still very excited.”
Girl: “I have to go back to work tomorrow morning.”
Elf: “Then take a leave of absence.”
Girl: “How can it be so easy… It can’t be the same as the previous two days. You must have a good night’s sleep tonight!”
This scene perfectly interprets the fast-paced life of contemporary people. I also suffer from these kinds of self-talks late at night when I can’t sleep, they tug back and forth in my head and keep me from falling asleep.
The game uses a split screen to show the cute and annoying “little theater” in people’s minds. On the left is the girl tossing and turning, and on the right is the energetic elf. The elf performs various performances in the girl’s mind, and the trick-or-treating ways emerge in an endless stream.
Gameplay is mostly about clicking items in the correct order and solving puzzles. I don’t want to reveal too much here, but it can be said that some of the puzzles are cleverly designed, with quite interesting twists, and if there are levels, there is a hint system to help players escape from the farce that is going on. But overall, this game is more about experience than challenge.
What impresses me more is the sheep counting part in the game. Because we all know that when we want to fall asleep, we can only toss and turn in bed, counting sheep represents our insomnia anxiety.
The only regret is that the process is too short. Although the demo version has added compositional gameplay compared to the version I experienced earlier, I still have no idea. I’m glad that I can play “Insomnia” when I have insomnia in reality, which allows me to get a real and resonant gaming experience, which accurately captures the feeling of my insomnia.
The demo version ends with a line: “I wish you a good night’s sleep, see you next time with insomnia.” The developer also expressed on Steam that he hoped that players would have a good night’s sleep after playing “Insomnia”. I am very grateful for their blessings, and sincerely hope that everyone can sleep well, and there will be no insomnia in the world.
