California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 1162 to formally make pay transparency into law. The law requires employers with more than 15 employees to disclose salary ranges in job postings, and California-based companies with more than 100 employees to disclose median pay gaps by gender and race. California businesses have until January 2023 to comply with the rule. Well-known companies in California such as Meta/Facebook, Alphabet/Google and Disney will all be required to disclose salary ranges. Colorado, New York City and Washington state have all passed similar laws, with Colorado’s law already in effect, New York City’s law set to take effect on November 1, and the New York state legislature’s law awaiting Governor Kathy Hochul’s signature.
