I was born in 1952 in the northeast corner of Taiwan, surrounded by mountains on three sides and facing the sea on the other side, with beautiful scenery and simple folk customs. When I was a child, Taiwan had just got rid of the Japanese colonial rule. It was a waste of time. Economically, it was as poor and backward as the mainland, which was separated by a sea. The schoolbag I used when I was in elementary school was the old schoolbag that my brother and sister used and left to make up. canvas bag. My childhood memories are always beautiful. I am as naughty as other children. I like to go to temple fairs, watch Gezi plays, and read comic books. History is my favorite. When I was in junior high school, I had read Li Dongfang’s “Detailed Chinese History Series” and Cai Dongfan’s “Popular Romance of Chinese Dynasties”. The seemingly aimless dabbling in my youth made me unknowingly realize that in the long history of the Chinese nation, whenever the country is faced with the fall of life and death, there are always people with lofty ideals, who will not hesitate to destroy the family and save the country, throw their heads and shed their blood. Sacrificing myself to save the country, the infiltration of these stories sprouted my original intention to dedicate myself to the rejuvenation of the nation.
In 1971, I was admitted to National Taiwan University and was elected as the president of the freshman student union. When I entered the school, the movement to defend the Diaoyu Islands was in the ascendant. The Diaoyu Islands have always been China’s territory. When Japan occupied Taiwan, the Diaoyu Islands were under the jurisdiction of my hometown, Yilan. In 1970, the U.S. government announced that it would “return” the Diaoyu Islands and Okinawa, which were entrusted to Japan after World War II, the following year. For this reason, overseas Taiwanese students were excited and launched a huge movement to defend the Diaoyu Islands. When I entered Taiwan University, I was the president of the student union. Participate in rallies from time to time to denounce the United States and Japan. Then in October of that year, the United Nations passed a resolution with an overwhelming majority of votes to restore the People’s Republic of China’s seat in the United Nations. The people of Taiwan were very confused. When the sense of precariousness pervaded Taiwan society, it was better to sit down and walk. I came from Taiwan. The university transferred to the Army Academy, hoping to turn the tide and fulfill the responsibilities of a young man.
During the four years of studying in the Army Academy, I have more time to think about the future of the Chinese nation. Gradually, I realized that the United States disregarded the historical fact that the sovereignty of the Diaoyu Islands belonged to China, and handed over the entrusted Diaoyu Islands to Japan. In essence, it was not like returning the defeated Germany’s concession in Qingdao to one of the victorious countries at the Paris Peace Conference after World War I. China was handed over to another power Japan, just like Japan. This realization made me realize that if the nation does not rejuvenate, the fate of the nation in which man is the knife and I am the fish cannot be changed. Back then, Taiwan, with a population of 17 million, was prosperous economically under the rule of the Kuomintang and became one of the Four Asian Tigers to be proud of. The right to speak and influence can be said. In the face of the international structure based on political interests and military strength, the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation can only depend on the comprehensive development and strength of the motherland with a population of 1 billion. Moreover, the development of the mainland can not only Providing a broader space for the further development of the Taiwanese people will also allow Taiwan to finally get rid of its fate of being an inferior colony or a pawn at the mercy of foreign powers for more than a century.
After graduating from the Army Academy in 1975, I stayed at the school to serve as the platoon leader of the student company. The following year, I was admitted to the Institute of Business Administration of National Chengchi University, which is the most difficult test in Taiwan. I completed my master’s degree in two years, and returned to the army in 1978. The company commander of Mashan Company, the closest to the mainland. At that time, whenever I looked across a shallow strait in the mist of dawn and the afterglow of the setting sun, I looked across the shallow strait and looked at the serene and distant Nantaiwu scenery like a Song Dynasty landscape painting. , should I stay in Taiwan as a star-like elite to pursue a smooth personal career, or should I follow the call of my heart and return to the poor and backward motherland that I have never set foot on to contribute to its development? The expectations I had for myself since I was a child made me choose the latter.
Chinese intellectuals have always taken the rise and fall of the country as their own responsibility. After the Opium War in 1840, there were five generations of intellectuals who worked hard to revive the nation before me, including Zeng Guofan, Li Hongzhang, Zhang Zhidong and other first generation who promoted the Westernization Movement, Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao and Tan Sitong promoted the 1980 Reform and the second generation who promoted the democratic revolution such as Sun Yat-sen, Huang Xing, Song Jiaoren, and the third generation who promoted the new culture and the May Fourth Movement such as Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao, and Hu Shi, who entered universities after the May Fourth Movement. The fourth generation who participated in the Northern Expedition, the War of Resistance and the Socialist Revolution after graduation, and the fifth generation who participated in socialist construction after graduating from university after 1949. As intellectual elites, they have made efforts worthy of the blood and tears of future generations for the rejuvenation of the nation. However, measured by the economic foundation, China’s international status is still declining, and the rejuvenation of the nation is still out of reach. Dream.
Compared with the previous five generations of intellectuals since the Opium War, I am fortunate. After the reform and opening up in 1978, our country has ushered in rapid growth for more than 40 consecutive years. Now our country is closer to the nation than any period in history. The great renaissance of China, I returned to the motherland in 1979 at the right time, witnessed and participated in this miracle of economic growth in human history. The needs of the times gave me the opportunity to set up the China Economic Research Center (now the National Development Institute) at Peking University with a few like-minded friends in 1994, which led to the modernization of economics education in my country and the localization, standardization and internationalization of research. It has opened up an atmosphere of combining academic research and policy research, and has become one of the country’s high-end think tanks. As a result, I was able to take up the position of senior vice president of the World Bank and chief economist in charge of development policy in 2008, which is called the highest position of economists in the world, and only famous economists in the United States and Europe have been qualified to serve. . The sharp contrast between China’s booming development and the fact that other developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America have been unable to escape the poverty or middle-income trap under the guidance of mainstream Western theories when I was working in the World Bank gave me the confidence to break free from the intellectual elites of developing countries. The existing thinking paradigm of “learning from the west”, he returned to Peking University after his work at the World Bank and founded the Institute of New Structural Economics to promote the independent innovation of the theoretical system of new structural economics, which is based on my country’s development experience. The research results based on China’s reform and development experience have also allowed me to board the world’s top academic platform for the annual Marshall Economics Lecture at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom and the annual Kuznets Economics Lecture at Yale University in the United States. He became the first Chinese economist to be elected as an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Developing World (formerly the Third World Academy of Sciences) and a foreign academician of the British Academy of Sciences. Especially on the 40th anniversary of the reform and opening up, I was honored to be an explorer of reform theory. One of the 100 people awarded the title and medal of reform pioneer by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council.
To achieve one thing by one person, there must be “the right time, the right place, and the harmony”. The prosperity of the motherland has given our generation many “times” to achieve our personal dreams. Growing up and living in the reform and opening up of the motherland has given us. Of course, “people and people” are also an indispensable and important factor in making a career. When I was in Taiwan, my parents, brothers and sisters cut down on food and clothing for me to study. Many teachers and supervisors encouraged me. After returning to the mainland of the motherland, whether it was studying at Peking University, studying in the United States, or returning to work in the motherland after graduation, there were always many teachers and teachers. , leaders take care of my life, create conditions for my work, and a group of friends who know each other, understand each other, colleagues who share weal and woe, handsome young students who are struggling to move forward, and more about Shanwanli along the way. With an unrepentant wife and a pair of children.
Looking back on the past, from the young man who forced new words to talk about his sorrows, to now I have reached the age where I can do whatever I want without breaking the rules. Life on both sides of the strait is fortunate that the waves are not disturbed. If something is achieved, there are many people to thank. There are many relatives and seniors who were kind to me when I was young. I can only thank me in the next life, and some friends are still separated from each other. Talking and talking happily, these regrets can only be expressed in the heart of the local accent, the story, and the aspirations of the youth who have not forgotten for forty-three years. Looking forward to the future, in the new pattern of the world that has not seen in a century Many parents, teachers, and friends who care about me, take care of me, encourage me, and support me in the process.
