The Liu Qiang Dongmingzhou incident ushered in an unexpected turn. On the evening of October 1, North American time, the legal teams of both parties issued a joint statement, which indicated that the two sides of the case had reached a settlement, and the details of the settlement were not announced. The case was scheduled to begin Oct. 3 in Hennepin County District Court in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The statement said: The misunderstanding caused by Mr. Liu Qiangdong and Ms. Liu Jingyao in an accidental incident in Minnesota, USA in 2018 took up a lot of social resources and caused serious trouble to each other’s families. Today, in order to avoid further litigation damage, the two sides decided to clear up the misunderstanding and reach a settlement to bring this incident to an end. Except for the above statement, Ms. Liu Jingyao, her representatives and lawyers will not make any comments, and the two parties will not issue other joint statements.

Earlier, the plaintiff and the defendant had just selected a jury for two days. Liu Qiangdong himself was present throughout the process, and Zhang Zetian was also in the gallery. Jiemian News noticed at the scene that the judge also discussed with the lawyers of both parties about the preparations for the next court session after the jury was selected. Lawyer Liu Qiangdong asked the plaintiff whether the final witnesses and material evidence had been selected. It is reported that the court and lawyers will also use Zoom meetings over the weekend to resolve some procedural issues as planned.

On December 21, 2018, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office in Minneapolis announced the results of the investigation into the Liu Qiangdong incident and decided not to prosecute. Four months later, Liu Jingyao filed a civil lawsuit against Liu Qiangdong and JD.com in the Hennepin County District Court. In the next three and a half years, the public’s attention to the case has decreased, but the trial of the case has been ongoing. Since September 2019, most of the time, the court has hearings, case management meetings, etc. almost every month.

From beginning to end, in the case presentations and hearings submitted to the court, the plaintiff and the defendant are two very different accounts of what happened during the same time period. Liu Jingyao accused Liu Qiangdong of intending to harm her, illegally restricting her freedom, and sexual assault, while Liu Qiangdong and his lawyers insisted that the two had a consensual sexual relationship. According to the original trial process, the jury will judge and make a verdict on the evidence provided by both parties under the guidance of the judge over the next month.
