Walter Ufer, of the Taos Society of Artists, was a leading advocate of American figurative painting in the early 20th century. He joined the group in 1917 and specialized in portraits of Pueblo Indians and vivid landscapes painted fluidly with high-key palettes and textured brushstrokes. On the Rio Grande blends his sensitive depiction of a contemplative local figure (his favorite model Jim Mirabell) with a lush New Mexico setting. A staunch supporter of individual liberty and a devout socialist, Ulf was deeply concerned with the plight of the Pueblo Indians and what he saw as their centuries-long oppression.
