Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Albert Francis King is widely recognized as Pittsburgh’s leading still life painter of the 19th century. Kim, who is largely self-taught, is best known for his still lifes. Noted for its uncanny realism and emotionally charged mood, the painting is created by contrasting tantalizing food and drink with a dark setting that evokes darkness and loneliness. Although King’s paintings are sometimes considered dated, today the artist is recognized for his technique and for continuing the tradition of early 19th-century American still life painting, often with the latest subject matter.
