Meta Platforms said on Friday it will send notifications to about 1 million Facebook users that their accounts may have been linked to malicious apps downloaded from Apple and Google’s software stores, according to reports. at risk.

The company said it found more than 400 Android and iOS apps this year that were designed to steal user login information. Meta said the company had notified Apple and Google of the incident and assisted in removing the apps.

Meta said the apps were masquerading as photo editing, mobile gaming or health-tracking software to trick users into providing account information.

Apple said 45 of the 400 problematic apps were from the App Store and have since been removed. A Google spokesman said the company has also removed all problematic malicious apps.

“Cybercriminals know how popular these apps are, and they use the same themes to trick users and steal their accounts and information,” said David Agranovich, director of global threat disruption at Meta. “If An app that promises something too good to be true, like a feature that other platforms or social networking sites haven’t released yet, is likely to have ulterior motives.”

For example, a typical scam begins when a user downloads a malicious app. In addition to providing basic functionality, the app will ask Facebook users to log in, thereby tricking them into usernames and passwords. But in the process, they unknowingly gave the app’s developer account access.

Meta said the company will share anti-spoofing tips with potential victims to help them identify potentially problematic apps. Agranovich said the malicious activity took place outside the Meta system, and the passwords of the 1 million users may not have been stolen by criminals.
