On September 28, 2022, the Asian Institute of Graphics announced on its official website that Professor Zhou Kun from Zhejiang University in China won the Outstanding Technical Contribution Award.
Asiagraphics The Asian Graphics Society is a professional organization of the Asian computational graphics and interactive technology research community registered in Hong Kong in 2016. Asiagraphics is currently chaired by Prof. Shimin Hu of Tsinghua University, with Prof. Seungyong Lee of Pohang University of Science and Technology in South Korea and Prof. Hongbo Fu of City University of Hong Kong as Vice-Chairmen.
The Asiagraphics 2022 Outstanding Technical Contribution Award won by Professor Zhou Kun is reviewed annually, and is selected by the award jury chaired by Professor Ming Lin of University of Maryland, College Park and Professor Leif Kobbelt of RWTH Aachen University.
Zhou Kun, Professor of the School of Computer Science, Zhejiang University, Fellow of the International Computer Society, and Fellow of the International Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, was born in Yueyang, Hunan in 1977. He received a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Zhejiang University in 1997 and a doctorate in industry from Zhejiang University in 2002. His research areas are computer graphics, computer vision, human-computer interaction and virtual reality, and he has published more than 70 papers in ACM SIGGRAPH / TOG and 30 papers in IEEE TVCG.
In 2011, he won the MIT Technology Review Global Outstanding Young Innovator Award. He has served as the scientific consultant of the Visual Computing Center of the King University of Science and Technology of Saudi Arabia, the director of the Virtual Reality Branch of the Chinese Institute of Electronics, the director of the Intelligent Graphics Committee of the Chinese Society of Image and Graphics, the deputy director of the Intelligent Interaction Committee of the Chinese Society of Artificial Intelligence, and the academician. Founding editor-in-chief of the journal “Visual Informatics”, editorial board member of “ACM Transactions on Graphics” and editorial board member of “IEEE Transactions on Visualization & Computer Graphics”, etc.
He is recognized as one of the most prominent researchers in computer graphics in the industry, making fundamental contributions to major areas of computer graphics and having a profound impact on the graphics and gaming industries.
Many innovative works have been done in differential domain geometric computing, realistic graphics rendering and GPU parallel computing, especially the work on GPU parallel computing is recognized as a pioneering contribution to the field. His team was the first to propose GPU algorithms for building KD trees, a data structure critical to many graphics and vision applications, and developed the RenderAnts system, which maps all stages of the movie rendering pipeline to run on the GPU , which runs an order of magnitude faster than Pixar’s RenderMan.
In addition, Zhou Kun also made outstanding contributions in 3D face shape regression. For the first time, he realized real-time capture of high-quality facial expressions with ordinary cameras, and pioneered the technology of realistic hair modeling and avatar digitization for a single image. The avatar digitization technology has been authorized to be used by more than 1,000 companies around the world, with more than 100 million daily active users.
