Explorer multi-tab pages, system-level real-time subtitles, more convenient window split screen, more colorful input methods… Microsoft’s Windows 11 has been updated to 22H2, have you updated it?
Start menu and taskbar
Click on the start menu, and you can present the application in this, this, this form, that is, change the proportion of applications fixed to the start menu and recommended applications. You can choose directly in “Settings” – “Personalization” – “Start”. You can finally, as before, drag and drop software icons to create folders, name them, and arrange them in groups.
Click “All Apps”, and now you can finally drag and drop the software to the taskbar, which is convenient and quick to open. It also includes the ability to directly drag and drop files to specific software on the taskbar to quickly open them.
When the mouse cursor crosses the taskbar, not only open software applications will display thumbnails, search will display recent search history, multiple desktop icons will display all desktops, and widget icons will display all widgets.
A year later, this widget still hasn’t been updated. There are only a few apps, some cannot be used, and the rest are all news feeds that cannot be turned off. If you remember that Windows 11 defaults to centering the start menu and application icons, set it back, and you will find that this widget icon is stuck here. Fortunately, you can still turn it off directly in “Settings”.
By the way, the updated search box also wants to give you some news. If you don’t like it, you can click the three dots in the upper right corner and turn off the search points in the search settings. Then it will come back like this.
If you remember Cortana, it’s long gone from the start menu, and probably completely dumb.
Multitasking switching: multi-tab, multi-window, multi-desktop and split screen
When you click and drag a window, an interesting interaction will appear at the top of the entire window, like a smart peninsula. To hold, to let go; to hold, to let go. Snap the window to it, and a multi-window split screen option will appear. You can drag and drop windows to any part of any combination for quick split screen.
Compared with the previous method of hovering the mouse on the restore window and then selecting the split screen method, it cannot be said that it is more convenient, but it can only be said that it is more interesting. Want to go faster? You can press Windows+Z, then quickly press the corresponding number key. By the way, you can also place the mouse cursor on the dividing line, drag the dividing line, and resize the window according to your needs.
In the previous version of Windows 11, pressing Windows+Tab will present full-screen multitasking and multi-desktop. Pressing Alt+Tab has a similar UI, but only presents full-screen multitasking. The difference of 22H2 is that when you press Alt + Tab, it is no longer full screen, and the effect of emphasis will be more obvious. If you’ve split windows before, using Windows+Tab or Alt+Tab will now help you quickly select the split group, like this.
You can still use Ctrl+Windows+D to quickly create a new desktop, and use Ctrl+Windows+ left and right arrow keys to quickly switch between multiple desktops, but the feedback is very poor, new creation is like no new creation, and switching is like no switching . Even if 22H2 fixes the previous version’s inability to modify the desktop background alone, it’s not very useful. If you remember a version before Windows 10, when switching between multiple desktops, there will be a sense of panning feedback by sliding left and right, similar to the multi-desktop switching of macOS. Now, you can only Windows+Tab, then mouse click, feel a little more comfortable.
In the multitasking switch, the resource manager originally added a new multi-tab function, but maybe because it is not fully developed, this 22H2 is not open. But if you want to use it in advance, you can use a tool called ViVeTool on GitHub to open it carefully. The multi-tab function allows you to switch quickly through Ctrl+Tab just like in the browser. Currently, it seems that it cannot be separated by dragging and dropping.

Press Windows+E to open Explorer. The original default quick access has now become the “main folder”, which consists of quick access, favorites and recently used files (this is called the favorites key, I don’t know if it is an omission of official Chineseization). You can right-click any file to add to favorites or right-click any folder to pin to quick access. They will then all appear in the main folder for your quick access.
If you don’t like it at all, you can still click the three dots in the upper right corner, and in “Options” – “General”, set “This PC” to be opened by default when opening the Explorer.
When setting this up, you’ll find that you can now choose to open OneDrive by default when you open Explorer. Not only that, click OneDrive on the left column, and a OneDrive icon is also added to the upper right corner. You can view the file synchronization status, your space allowance in real time, and set or enter the webpage to do more settings. Although you can never open the web side of OneDrive.
In the previous version of Windows 11, all folder icons were yellowish. 22H2 finally ushered in the return of folder thumbnails, which looks more pleasing to the eye.
Other updates, we quickly skip
In the previous version of Windows 11, there was a Live Caption feature, but the corresponding controls did not appear until 22H2. Click here in the lower right corner, then find Accessibility, find real-time subtitles, turn on the switch directly, or find the corresponding function in the settings, or directly press the shortcut key Windows+Ctrl+L.
Once turned on, you can have system-level real-time subtitles. You can directly present subtitles when watching video or listening to audio. You can customize the style and color of subtitles, support microphones, and detect swear words.
However, only American English is currently available.
In fact, the real-time subtitle function is already available in Microsoft PowerPoint, and supports multiple languages and real-time translation. So system-level multi-language real-time subtitles and translations are possible, if that mysterious department at Microsoft doesn’t get involved…
In addition, in “Accessibility” – “Voice”, a voice access function is provided. After it is turned on, you can control the computer by voice to perform some small operations. But for now, only American English is supported.
In addition, the narrator in the auxiliary function has also added several human voices.
Click the time and date in the lower right corner, and a focus mode appears below, which is actually a timing focus function integrated in the clock. You can set a time yourself and start to focus. Find “System” in the settings, you can see the “Focus” setting option. You can set whether to show timers when you’re focused, whether to hide lockscreen reminders and app blinks, and whether to enable Do Not Disturb.
This and the original Do Not Disturb mode are two different functions.
If you remember, the last feature Microsoft added in this place of Calendar was to quickly add events.
The input method is more abundant. In “Settings” – “Personalization” – “Text Input”, you can now choose a different theme, or customize the theme, customize the background, size, word count, font, etc. of the candidate window. This effect is also applied to the expression input and voice input panels simultaneously;
If you use the built-in Photos app to view pictures, you can now open multiple comparison filters at the same time;
A large number of icons and UI interfaces are unified into Fluent Design, icons for this computer, network, recycle bin, quick assistant, sandbox, etc., interfaces for programs and functions, network, etc.; volume, microphone, camera and even airplane mode The status bar is also more uniform; there are almost all right-click menus, although sometimes you can hold down Shift and right-click to see the traditional menu;
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, the task manager has also been replaced with a new UI, and an efficiency mode has been added. Selecting the supported software and setting the efficiency mode to it can limit the software or process with high resource consumption to a certain extent. Of course, it may also cause your software to run unstable.
Some small operations are also faster. Place the mouse cursor on the volume icon in the lower right corner and slide the wheel to quickly adjust the volume; click the Bluetooth icon here to quickly manage Bluetooth devices; use the shortcut keys Windows+Alt+K to quickly control Microphone switch; in Explorer, select a file and you can use Ctrl+Shift+C to quickly copy its path.
In addition to OneDrive, more Microsoft services are integrated into the system. For example, in “Settings” – “Account”, you can see the Microsoft 365 or Office services you are using, the specific period and allowance.
When the screen is locked, you can continue to control the playback and pause of the media, but there seems to be no progress bar; in the personalized settings interface, you can also select “Windows Focus” to automatically change the desktop picture;
In “System” – “Sound”, you can now perform more operations on the sound equipment. If you happen to have a pair of Airpords headphones, the sound quality has also been improved to a certain extent.
If your monitor supports HDR, HDR calibration is now also supported.
When the icons on your taskbar are fixed too much, three dots will be displayed, click, and a second row will appear, but few people will use this.
By the way, when using Android apps on Windows 11, Microsoft is cooperating with Amazon. It originally supported more than 1,000 apps, but now it supports about 20,000 apps, but the situation faced by domestic friends is… Unusable.
By the way, in fact, Microsoft also put its own video editor into the cold palace, acquired an editor called Clipchamp, there are many customizable templates and fool editing methods, and also integrated Microsoft’s own AI dubbing tool here. , enter text, and that’s it.
