The Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli idealized and humanized the picture of the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus, conveying the divine beauty of maternal love. Maria’s expression was soft, her skin smooth, and she stroked her son’s chubby cheek with her forehead, the baby clutching the back of her neck. There was also an angel, a little smaller, watching all this admiringly. Botticelli was well-known in his time, and he developed a unique style of painting that was sensual and tactile, universal for religious and secular subjects.

Sandro Botticelli created one of the most famous paintings in the world: The Birth of Venus. This stunning masterpiece is in our 50 Masterpiece Postcard Set ; go check it out, you’ll love them! Also, check out Botticelli’s second most famous work , La Primavera . <3
