Nature: Academician Wang Chaoyang’s team achieves more stable and safer power battery fast charging

At 23:00 on October 12, 2022, Beijing time, the pioneer of fast battery charging and the team of Academician Wang Chaoyang of Pennsylvania State University made another major breakthrough in the field of extreme fast charging (XFC) technology for power batteries: the first realization of high-energy density lithium-ion batteries ( 265 Wh/kg) can be charged at an extremely high speed in ten minutes, and the cycle life is as high as more than 2,000 times . The relevant results were published in the world’s top scientific journal “Nature”.

Charging speed is the biggest challenge restricting the mass adoption of electric vehicles. “Charging for one hour and queuing for four hours” has become an embarrassment for many electric vehicle owners to travel, which has seriously damaged consumers’ confidence in electric vehicles. In recent years, Europe and the United States and other countries have accelerated the construction of ultra-high-power charging piles and vigorously developed ten-minute extreme-speed charging (XFC) technology; my country’s “New Energy Vehicle Industry Development Plan (2021-2035)” also clearly proposes to “strengthen the research and development of high-power charging technology” “. However, current mainstream electric vehicles still take 45-60 minutes to charge at the fastest.

The rapid charging of high specific energy power batteries is a current world problem. Under high-rate charging, the negative electrode of the power battery is prone to “lithium precipitation”, which seriously shortens the battery life and may cause safety accidents. Especially with the increase of energy density, the deterioration of ion transport inside the battery makes lithium precipitation very easy to occur. The best experimental result of the fast charging of power batteries was created in 2019 by the team of academician Wang Chaoyang, who proposed an asymmetric temperature thermal regulation method to achieve extremely fast charging of 210Wh/kg batteries.

Three years later, the team used a double-salt high-temperature-resistant electrolyte, which was combined with the thermal regulation method to achieve extremely fast charging of 265 Wh/kg lithium battery (charged to ~75% in 10 minutes), with more than 1,000 cycles. The cycle life of the battery has once again created a world record for extremely fast charging of power batteries. Moreover, this work reveals for the first time that high-specific-energy power batteries only need air cooling for extremely fast charging, thus greatly improving the integration, reliability, and safety of the battery system. It is worth noting that all experiments in this achievement use existing industrial-scale mass-produced battery materials, which can be quickly applied to commercial power battery products.
