Anna Ancher often painted small paintings with one or two figures, but around 1900 she experimented with large works with many figures, like this one today. She created many sketches for the painting in which she experimented with various colors and tested various compositional elements. The painting was exhibited at the Spring Exhibition in Charlottenburg, Copenhagen in 1899. It was privately owned until 2013 and probably hasn’t been exhibited since 1899. In the painting, you can see mothers and children who are either waiting or have been vaccinated against smallpox. Children must be vaccinated by their seventh birthday. Vaccination of Danish children became mandatory in 1810 and was phased out in 1977. The disease was declared eradicated in 1980.
