Meta’s metaverse world is a disappointment

Mark Zuckerberg is betting the company’s future on the metaverse . But internal documents show that the transition was plagued by technical glitches, a lack of response from users and a lack of clarity on how to succeed. The company’s flagship consumer-oriented metaverse, Horizon Worlds, has fewer than 200,000 users, according to internal documents. Most users who visit Horizon typically don’t return to the app after the first month, and the user base has steadily declined since the spring. “An empty world is a sad world,” according to a document summarizing the company’s work to guide users through encounters with others in scenarios. Horizon has far fewer simultaneous users than social-focused startup VR Chat and the pioneering virtual world Second Life launched in 2003, people familiar with the matter said.
