The Texas attorney general sued Google on Thursday, alleging that the search giant violated state law by collecting biometric data such as facial and voice features without the full consent of users. According to a complaint filed in Texas State District Court in Midland County, Texas says Google’s data collection practices date back to 2015 and affected millions of the state’s residents. Texas alleges that Google used Google Photos and Google Assistant, as well as the capabilities of its Nest smart home products, to collect and store facial and voice recognition data without proper consent. Google uses this data for commercial purposes, such as improving its AI algorithms and selling cloud storage space to users.
