India’s competition watchdog fines Google $161.9 million for anticompetitive conduct related to Android mobile devices. This is a major setback for Google in the Indian market. The Competition Commission of India’s investigation into Google follows complaints three and a half years ago, saying Google’s imposition of unfairness by mandating device makers to pre-install the full Google Mobile Suite and placing apps in prominent positions conditions, in violation of antitrust laws. India is Google’s largest market, with Android accounting for 97 percent of the country’s 600 million smartphones. Google’s antitrust violations also include denying market access to competing search apps and using its app store dominance to protect its dominance in search, browsers and YouTube, among others.
