After Liz Truss, the shortest-serving prime minister in British history, resigned last week, the spotlight has again been on who will be the leader of the Conservative Party. Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who had been talking about a “resurrection” and made frequent moves, officially announced his withdrawal from the race on Sunday night.
After Johnson quit, Rishi Sunak, a Conservative former chancellor who ran with Truss for leadership and lost to her, jumped to become the closest person to the prime ministership. Conservative MP Penny Mordaunt (Penny Mordaunt) is also running for party leadership with Sunak, but she is far less supported in the party than Sunak. If Sunak is elected party leader, he will become the first Indian prime minister in British history.

Muhsin Hendricks, 55, is an imam practicing at a mosque in Cape Town, South Africa. Hendrakes has hosted prayer meetings and weddings for LGBTQ+ Muslims here since 1998, giving them a safe place to practice their Islamic faith. Although South Africa legalized same-sex marriage in 2006 and is relatively open to the queer community in the African country, homophobic attitudes are still common in mosques.
Hendrakes was born in a Muslim family. He used to be an Arabic teacher and a fashion designer. After getting married and having children, he came out of the closet at the age of 29 and was finally accepted by his mother. Hendrakes was excommunicated by the local Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) in 2007 after his gay identity was exposed in a documentary, but that didn’t stop Hendrakes from continuing to serve LGBTQ+ Muslims. He said that the clergy of Islam does not require authoritative certification like Christianity, and as an imam, he can still continue to preside over prayer meetings there.
“I hope there will be more queer imams in the future so that we can continue to thrive when I’m not in this world.”
I can’t be the only one who knows
Author Salman Rushdie, who was attacked on August 16 this year, survived after being rescued, but was blind in one eye and disabled in one hand.
After Rushdie published the well-known novel “The Devil’s Psalm” in 1988, because the protagonist of the novel was a Muslim and the content alluded to the history of Islam’s religious creation, Iran’s Shiite religious leader Khameni issued an order to hunt down Rushdie; In the more than 30 years since the book was published, publishers and translators from various countries have been attacked one after another, and the Japanese translator Igarashi Igarashi has even died. Rushdie suffered three serious injuries to his neck and 15 wounds to his chest and torso after he was assassinated.
“He survived…that’s the most important thing,” Rushdie’s agent said in an interview.
