U.S. federal prosecutors indicted Mark Sokolovsky, a 26-year-old Ukrainian man who ran a malicious program-as-a-service. He ran Raccoon, a malicious program that steals sensitive information, offered to customers for a monthly fee equivalent to $200 in cryptocurrency, and Sokolovsky and his associates provided the malicious program, infrastructure and technical support to customers. Customers use the service to infect targets and steal emails and credentials related to bank accounts, credit cards, cryptocurrency wallets and other private information. It supports 29 Chromium based browsers, Mozilla apps, wallets from Exodus and Jaxx. The malware is written in C++ and supports screenshots. Once all data is extracted from the infected machine, it uninstalls and removes all traces. U.S. prosecutors said the data of 2 million users was stolen, and they found more than 50 million credentials and identifications in the stolen data. Sokolovsky was arrested in the Netherlands in March this year.
