We’re continuing our special month with the Denver Art Museum to check out their collection. Enjoy! : )
Robert Henri ( 1865-1929) grew up in Cozzard, Nebraska, and Denver, Colorado, and studied painting in Paris, where he developed a strong sympathy with Impressionism before moving to to New York, where he became a painter and art educator. In 1913 he traveled to Southern California, where he met Tom Po Qui, a Teva artist from P’ohwhóge Owingeh (San Ildefonso Pueblo). With quick brushstrokes, Henry depicts the colorful clothes she wears, the blunt gaze, and the shimmering light on the silver pumpkin flower necklace. The Tewa are a linguistic group of the Pueblo Indians whose homeland lies along and near the Rio Grande, north of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Side note: Let’s take a look at howNative American artists expressed themselves and their cultural heritage in art.
