British regulator Ofcom has sounded the death knell for fax machines, as it begins to repeal legislation related to the use of fax machines. Commercialized by Xerox in 1964, and widely used by businesses around the world since the 1980s, fax machines have been replaced by email, scanners, cloud-based faxing, and instant messaging services. Ofcom says that with the development of digital technology and broadband, fax machines have been replaced by email and file-sharing software that offer better or the same functionality. Ofcom said it was preparing to revise telecommunications rules to eliminate fax machines. While fax machines are long outdated, they are still in use in the UK health care sector, where digitisation has been slow. The NHS also has hundreds of fax machines.
