Meredith Whittaker, president of the non-profit foundation that develops encrypted messaging app Signal, has revealed that a Snapchat and Instagram-like “Stories” feature will be available on users’ profile pages for 24 hours. Signal began testing the feature last month. Whittaker explains why a privacy-focused encrypted messaging app would launch such a feature: user demand. Their research found that users in South Africa and South Asia are obsessed with the feature, and it will encourage more users to use Signal. Whittaker said users could easily opt out of the feature if they didn’t want to, and Signal wouldn’t use it to display ads.
