Nvidia has announced open source its Linux GPU kernel driver module, with the source code posted on GitHub. Nvidia admits that its current form of kernel driver is not suitable for upstream, which means that the kernel mainline cannot incorporate its kernel driver for the time being. In addition, the open source driver does not contain the user space part, and the Nvidia GPU still needs closed source code on the Linux platform. AMD has long unified open source and closed source drivers on the Linux platform. Nvidia has long been criticized for being unfriendly to Linux support. Its proprietary drivers perform well, but the open source driver Nouveau project mainly implements support for Nvidia GPUs through reverse engineering. There are deficiencies. Nvidia said in its press release that it plans to find a more upstream-friendly approach.
